Acquired as a free agent in 2004. MOVEMENTS & INJURIES 13-Jan-04 Signed as a free agent by the San Diego Padres to a two-year contract. 20-Dec-03 Colorado Rockies declined to tender contract. GOING INTO CAMP: A full year in Colorado did Payton very well. Now with the Padres, it'll be tough to match that output, but he'll start most games in center field. ASSETS: An excellent contact hitter with some gap power. He'll work the count in his favor and he's an excellent runner who can be a force on the base paths. FLAWS: While a fine runner, Payton does need to work on his base-stealing techniques. Struggles in clutch situations. CAREER POTENTIAL: Best off in a platoon role. 2004 GAME HIGHS TOTAL OPP DATE LAST SEASON At Bats 5 15 times-last:vs.LA last:Aug.1 7 Runs 3 vs.Col May25 3 Hits 4 vs.Col May25 4 Doubles 2 vs.Fla May8 2 Triples 1 3 times-last:vs.Atl last:Aug.16 1 Home Runs 1 4 times-last:vs.SF last:Jul.22 2 Total Bases 0 - - 10 Extra-Base Hits 0 - - 3 Runs Batted In 4 vs.Col May25 7 Base on Balls 2 2 times-last:vs.Col last:Jun.2 3 Times on Base 0 - - 4 Strikeouts 3 vs.SF Apr.8 2 Stolen Bases 1 2 times-last:vs.SF last:Jul.27 1 Caught Stealing 0 - - 1 CAREER HIGHS (SEASON) TOTAL SEASON Games 157 2003 (Col) At Bats 600 2003 (Col) Runs 93 2003 (Col) Hits 181 2003 (Col) Doubles 32 2003 (Col) Triples 7 2002 (NYN/Col) Home Runs 28 2003 (Col) Total Bases 307 2003 (Col) Extra-Base Hits 65 2003 (Col) Runs Batted In 89 2003 (Col) Base on Balls 43 2003 (Col) Time on Bases 231 2003 (Col) Strikeouts 77 2003 (Col) Stolen Bases 7 2002 (NYN/Col) Caught Stealing 11 2000 (NYN) Batting Average .302 2003 (Col) On Base Percentage .354 2003 (Col) Slugging Average .512 2003 (Col) *Never qualified to be league leader (min 502 PA) AWARDS 1995 Double-A All-Star Team (Baseball America) Most Valuable Player (Eastern League - AA) Eastern League All-Star Team (AA) (Outfielder) 1994 Player of the Year (Short-Season - Baseball America) Short Season All-Star Team (Baseball America) New York-Penn League All-Star Team (A) (Outfielder) TRANSACTIONS 13-Jan-04 Signed as a free agent by the San Diego Padres. 31-Jul-02 Colorado Rockies traded John Thomson and Mark Little to the New York Mets for Jay Payton, Robert Stratton and Mark Corey. 02-Jun-94 Drafted by the New York Mets in supplemental round (29th overall) in 1994.
